Internship and Living Abroad Program in the Dominican Republic
The Internship
and Living Abroad Program in the Dominican Republic began in 1990
and was the first ILAP
program established by the L.T. Jordan Institute. Since that time, over 90 Aggies have lived,
worked, and played in this beautiful country.
Every summer, students head for Santo
Domingo for five life-changing weeks...
Michael Moshue Hicks, an English and
Spanish major from the class of 1991, interned with
the Education and Training Department at Codatel
(the Dominican Republic Telephone Company, a
division of GTE) through this program:
"...I have made lifelong friends who
will also influence the direction my life
takes in years ahead."

Lance Harris, a General Studies major in the class of
1993 interned with the Association for the Development
of Santiago, Dominican Republic:
"...The whole experience is such
an eye-opener; expanding many areas of a person's knowledge
- about the language, the people, the culture, the country
and its physical geographies; dealing with differences...a
person matures and learns about her/himself."

The relationships made with the host families often
turn into lasting friendships and can be one of the
most rewarding aspects of the program. Past participants
have received much experience in banks, hospitals,
television stations, construction companies, engineering
firms, universities, the local phone company
Codetel, and many other locations.

Outside of work, the ILAP
participants visit places that mark the beginning
of the New World, beautiful beaches and waterfalls,
and a variety of other interesting attractions.
